Iowa State 9, Iowa 6: Steele Jantz threw for one touchdown and the Cyclones’ defense made it stand up as they defeated the Hawkeyes for the second straight season.
James White added 93 total yards for Iowa State (2-0), which won for the first time in Iowa City since 2002.
Jantz finished with 241 yards passing and two interceptions while the Cyclones’ defense forced four turnovers and turned away Iowa on a number of occasions.
After Jantz found Aaron Horne for a 5-yard score on Iowa State’s opening drive, neither team could find the end zone for the remainder of the game.
Mike Meyer and Edwin Arceo traded short field goals to send the Cyclones into the break with a 9-3 advantage, but each team committed momentum-killing turnovers in the second half. Meyer managed the only score by either team in the second half on another short field goal to begin the fourth quarter.
But Iowa State’s defense made its three-point advantage hold up by forcing two punts, a turnover on downs and collecting an interception with just over a minute remaining.
Damon Bullock, who rushed for 150 yards in Iowa’s season-opening win over Northern Ilinois, ran for just 53 yards but added 56 yards receiving for the Hawkeyes (1-1).
