Virginia Tech 35, No. 7 Ohio State 21: Michael Brewer threw for 199 yards and two touchdowns and the visiting Hokies recorded seven sacks and a key late interception to end the Buckeyes’ nation-leading 25-game regular-season winning streak.
Sam Rogers and Bucky Hodges caught touchdown passes from Brewer, who was 23-for-36 in his second game since transferring from Texas Tech. In addition to the seven sacks, the Hokies (2-0) recorded 11 tackles for loss.
Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett, starting his second game in place of injured Braxton Miller, finished 9-for-29 for 219 yards and a touchdown but was intercepted three times, the last ran back 63 yards for a touchdown by Donovan Riley with 46 seconds remaining. Barrett also led all rushers for the Buckeyes (1-1) with 70 yards.
Ohio State trailed at the half for the second straight week but cut
the deficit to 21-14 on a 53-yard slant and run from Barrett to Michael
Thomas. Ohio State’s defense then forced turnovers on the next two
Virginia Tech possessions and the Buckeyes took advantage of the second,
as Ezekiel Elliott scored on a 15-yard option run to tie the score at
21 with 11:40 left.
Hodges caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from Brewer with 8:44 left to give Virginia Tech a 28-21 lead. Joey Slye missed a 46-yard field goal with 3:06 left that would have extended Virginia Tech’s lead to 10, but Riley, who had replaced Kendall Fuller two plays earlier after Fuller suffered cramps, ran back the interception to seal the win.
