Mississippi 56, Louisiana-Lafayette 15: Bo Wallace threw for four touchdowns and the Rebels running game produced 214 yards in their home opener.
Wallace was 23-of-28 for 316 yards and was intercepted once, while Jaylen Walton rushed for 89 yards and a touchdown for Mississippi (3-0). Vince Sanders finished with eight receptions for 125 yards and two touchdowns for the Rebels, who built 28-6 halftime lead.
Mississippi’s opportunistic defense created four turnovers and intercepted Louisiana-Lafayette quarterback Terrance Broadway three times. The Ragin Cajuns (1-2), the consensus pick to win the Sun Belt Conference, managed to score a touchdown with 1:04 left in the third quarter on an 8-yard run by Alonzo Harris.
The Rebels struck first just five minutes into the opening quarter when running back I’Tavius Mathers scored on a 56-yard run. Then after a Louisiana-Lafayette turnover deep in Mississippi territory, Wallace completed a 40-yard pass to Walton for a 14-0 lead.
The Ragin Cajuns were held to a pair of field goals in the first half. Hunter Stover connected on a 32-yard field goal with 1:55 left in the half then after a Wallace interception, Stover hit a 20-yard field goal with nine seconds remaining before halftime.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Wallace connected on 14 consecutive passes to start the game and was 10-for-10 for 178 yards and a touchdown in the first quarter. … Wallace had 75 attempts without an interception until CB Sean Thomas picked him off just before halftime. … The Rebels’ Senquez Golson finished with two interceptions - including one in the third quarter that was returned 59 yards for a touchdown.
