No. 16 Stanford 35, Army 0: Kevin Hogan threw for 216 yards and four touchdowns as the Cardinal bounced back by blanking the visiting Black Knights.
Devon Cajuste caught three TD passes and receiver Ty Montgomery ran for a score to go along with eight catches for 86 yards and a score for Stanford (2-1), which fell at home to USC last week. Hogan went 20-of-28 and the Cardinal defense shut down Army’s triple-option offense for most of the afternoon.
A.J. Schurr ran for 65 yards on six carries for the Black Knights (1-1), who piled up 341 yards on the ground in a win over Buffalo last week but were held to 198 on 56 carries by Stanford. Angel Santiago completed both of his passes for 13 yards and added 29 yards rushing.
The Cardinal set the tone with a touchdown on the opening drive when Hogan hit Cajuste with a 23-yard pass to cap a nine-play march, and turned a recovered fumble into a 14-0 halftime lead when Hogan found Cajuste with a 2-yard TD pass. Hogan needed nine plays to cover 98 yards in the third quarter, connecting with Cajuste again on a 15-yard scoring pass in the right corner of the end zone.
Montgomery took over in the fourth quarter, rushing in from four yards out with 11:35 left before catching a 32-yard TD pass from Hogan with 6:09 to play. Army nearly broke the shutout on its final drive before being stopped on fourth-and-1 at the Stanford 2.
