Maryland 32, Connecticut 21: C.J. Brown accounted for 399 total
yards, passed for a touchdown and ran for another as the visiting
Terrapins gave coach Randy Edsall his first win over his former team.
Stefon Diggs finished with five catches for 110
yards and hauled in Brown’s only touchdown throw for Maryland (3-0),
which opened the season with three straight wins for the first time
since 2001. Brandon Ross added 95 yards rushing for the Terrapins, who
won two straight to open last season but suffered a 24-21 setback at
Connecticut that triggered a 2-8 finish.
Chandler Whitmer threw for a career-high 349 yards
and a late score for the Huskies (0-2), who dropped consecutive games to
open the season for the first time since 2002. Lyle McCombs finished
with 53 yards rushing on 19 carries and scored a first-quarter
touchdown.
McCombs gave Connecticut an early lead with a 5-yard score on the team’s second possession, but Brown knotted it with 11:10
left before intermission with a 41-yard touchdown run up the middle.
The Terrapins’ Brad Craddock and Huskies’ Chad Christen exchanged field
goals before Craddock put Maryland ahead with a short field goal as time
expired in the first half.
Brown stretched the lead to 20-10 at the 9:04
mark of the third quarter when he faked an inside zone play and
connected with Diggs on a 12-yard score. Christen countered with a field
goal, but Whitmer was intercepted on the next drive by Dexter McDougle,
who returned it 49 yards for a touchdown.
