No. 25 Mississippi 44, Texas 23: Bo Wallace threw for two
touchdowns and ran for another and the visiting Rebels scored 27
unanswered points in the second half to go 3-0 for the first time since
1989.
Wallace’s 15-yard touchdown run midway through the third quarter put the
Rebels (3-0) ahead 24-23, then he made a nifty play-action
fake and hit Evan Engram for a 17-yard score. Jeff Scott’s 73-yard punt
return blew it open with nine seconds remaining in the period.
Texas (1-2) lost its second straight as new defensive coordinator Greg
Robinson was unable to thwart Wallace or Scott, who ran for 162 yards
and a touchdown on 20 carries.
Longhorns senior Case McCoy, playing for the injured David Ash, made his
seventh career start and hit 24-of-36 throws for 196 yards and
touchdown. But he could not lead a scoring drive after intermission.
Johnathan Gray ran for 91 yards and a touchdown.
After giving up 550 rushing yards last week, Texas allowed 272 yards on the ground, an average of 6.0 per carry.
GAME NOTEBOOK: In addition to Ash, the Longhorns played without star
RB/WR Daje Johnson (ankle). … Texas fell to 6-2 all-time against Ole
Miss, including 3-1 at home, as the Rebels avenged last year’s 66-31
loss in Oxford, Miss. … Ole Miss won its fifth straight dating to last
season and improved to 13-11 all-time against Big 12 foes.
