No. 16 Northwestern 38, Western Michigan 17: Junior Treyvon Green ran for 158 yards and two touchdowns as the Wildcats won their 15th straight home game against non-conference opponents.
Northwestern (3-0) trailed 10-7 in the second quarter before Kain Colter’s 6-yard touchdown pass to Christian Jones put the Wildcats ahead for good with 6:13 left in the half. Green ripped off a 42-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter and averaged 7.9 yards per carry.
Western Michigan (0-3) got two passing touchdowns from Tyler Van Tubbergen, including a 75-yarder to freshman Corey Davis. But Van Tubbergen was harassed constantly and finished 16-of-41 for 202 yards with an interception. Already 0-2 against Big Ten teams, the Broncos visit Iowa next week.
The Wildcats’ two-quarterback system continued to operate efficiently, with Kolter running for 106 yards and a touchdown and Trevor Siemian hitting 9-of-14 throws for 99 yards.
Improving to 3-0 in consecutive years for the first time since the late 1950s, Northwestern rolled up 471 total yards after averaging 544.5 yards in wins over California and Syracuse.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Northwestern won its ninth straight against MAC foes, improving to 17-8-1 all-time. … The Wildcats have 17 interceptions in their last six games dating to last season. … Lou Groza Award candidate Jeff Budzien missed a 42-yard field goal in the first quarter - his first miss after five makes this season - but the Wildcats senior nailed a 35-yarder right before halftime.
