Texas-El Paso 42, New Mexico State 21: Darrin Laufasa scored on consecutive carries in the fourth quarter as the visiting Miners wore down the Aggies.
Laufasa's first score, right through the heart of the New Mexico State defense, came from 17 yards out and capped a 14-play, 88-yard drive that consumed more than eight minutes. Following an interception, Laufasa scored on his next carry from 45 yards out.
Jameill Showers passed for one score and rushed for another to pace Texas-El Paso (1-1), which couldn't shake New Mexico State (0-3) until late in the third quarter when LaQuintus Dowell sprinted away for a 54-yard TD.
Andrew McDonald threw a pair of scoring passes for the Aggies in the first quarter to tie the game at 14. Rotating at quarterback for New Mexico State, King Davis III later tied the score at 21 with a 72-yard pass to Brandon Betancourt.
The Miners also got an 8-yard scoring run from Aaron Jones giving them a 21-14 lead at the break. Jones rushed for 97 yards on 22 carries as UTEP dominated the time of possession battle controlling the ball for 41:53. Showers was 18-for-28 passing for 253 yards.
