Vanderbilt 24, Massachusetts 7: Jonathan Krause caught a touchdown pass and finished with 105 yards receiving as the visiting Commodores downed the Minutemen in a non-conference game.
Krause reeled in a 42-yard touchdown from Austyn Carta-Samuels late in the first quarter and the Commodores (2-2) scored twice in the second half. Jordan Matthews (eight receptions, 76 yards) caught his 20th career touchdown from 11 yards out early in the fourth quarter for Vanderbilt, which hosts Alabama-Birmingham next week.
A.J. Doyle had a strong game at quarterback for the Minutemen (0-4) before exiting with a leg injury in the second half. The sophomore, who returned to the game in the fourth quarter but was largely ineffective, threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to sophomore wide receiver Tajae Sharpe in the first half, and finished 20-for-28 for 133 yards.
The Minutemen, who suffered a 42-point setback at Vanderbilt last season, also lost starting running back Stacey Bedell to a leg injury early in the game. Rob Blanchflower, a senior captain and tight end, was able to play in his first game of the season and had seven catches for 42 yards for UMass, which starts conference play at Bowling Green in two weeks.
Carta-Samuels, who finished 18-for-27 for 219 yards and had 38 yards rushing, and Carey Spear, who kicked a 32-yard field goal, made sure the Commodores never trailed. Jerron Seymour capped the scoring with a 1-yard touchdown with 4:41 remaining in the fourth quarter and combined with Wesley Tate for 120 yards on the ground.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Doyle completed 11 straight passes in the first half and led the Minutemen with 29 yards rushing. ... Sharpe had seven receptions for 45 yards . ... UMass DB Randall Jette had an interception and DE Kevin Byrne forced a fumble to lead the defensive effort. The Minutemen have forced eight turnovers in four games.
