Jacksonville State 32, Georgia State 26 (OT): DaMarcus James rushed for three touchdowns, including the game-winner in overtime, as the visiting Gamecocks survived the Panthers.
Wil Lutz, who sent the game into overtime with a 26-yard field goal as time expired in regulation, missed a 42-yard attempt for Georgia State (0-4) to begin the extra session, leaving the door open for Jacksonville State (4-0). James finished it off with a 2-yard burst for the win.
Max Shortell went 12-for-27 for 235 yards for the Gamecocks. Ronnie Bell kept the Panthers in the game by passing for 250 yards and two touchdowns, and rushing for another 57 yards on 11 carries.
James’ second 1-yard touchdown run of the game gave the Gamecocks a 13-9 edge with 9:22 left in the first half, and Eli Jenkins’ 5-yard scoring burst pushed the gap to 20-9 at the break. A field goal in the third stretched the lead to 23-9 before Georgia State began to fight back.
C.J. Scott blocked a punt deep in Jacksonville State territory and recovered it for a touchdown with 13:11 left in the game, and a fumble on the ensuing kickoff led to Bell’s 10-yard touchdown pass to Robert Davis less than a minute later, knotting it at 23. A field goal put the Gamecocks back in control before Lutz tied it up again.
