Wisconsin 41, Purdue 10: Melvin Gordon and James White combined for 292 yards rushing and four touchdowns as the Badgers bounced back from a controversial loss by thumping the visiting Boilermakers in the Big Ten opener for both teams.
Wisconsin (3-1, 1-0 Big Ten) ran for 388 yards and showed no lingering effects from a bizarre 32-30 defeat last week at Arizona State that knocked it out of the Top 25 Coaches Poll. Its backfield tandem led the way, with the sophomore Gordon (147 yards) scoring on runs of 5, 27 and 15 yards and the senior White (145 yards) breaking off a 70-yard TD.
Purdue (1-3, 0-1) failed to reach 300 yards of offense for the fourth game in a row under first-year head coach Darrell Hazell, gaining just 180 yards. Quarterback Rob Henry provided one of the few highlights, scrambling in from 22 yards out in the second quarter, but was 18-of-36 for 135 yards with an interception.
Corey Clement rushed for 83 yards and added a fourth-quarter touchdown for the Badgers, who saw time expire before it could get off a game-winning field-goal attempt last week against the Sun Devils as confused officials looked on. Jared Abbrederis had seven receptions for 94 yards for Wisconsin.
The Badgers piled up 299 total yards in the first half, including for 214 on the ground to take a 24-10 lead into intermission. It was more of the same in the second half, as Wisconsin finished with 546 yards of offense.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Badgers have beaten the Boilermakers a record eight times in a row. … White's 70-yard touchdown run was the longest of his 36 career scores. … Wisconsin's Curt Phillips replaced QB Joel Stave (12-of-20, 158 yards, one interception) in the fourth quarter.
