Cincinnati 14, Miami (Ohio) 0: Hosey Williams scored on a 1-yard touchdown run with less than five minutes remaining and quarterback Brendon Kay did the same moments later as the visiting Bearcats survived a defensive struggle in the 118th meeting between the programs.
Ralph Abernathy ran for 90 yards and Williams added 78 as Cincinnati (3-1) outgained its old rival by a large margin but hurt itself with three turnovers, seven penalties and two failed field-goal tries. Kay completed 23-of-37 passes for 171 yards and added 30 more on the ground for the Bearcats.
Austin Boucher was 7-for-16 for just 80 yards for Miami (0-3), which has lost eight straight to Cincinnati and seven in a row overall dating to 2012. The RedHawks had just four first downs, compared to 24 for the visitors.
Kay was intercepted twice in the second quarter and the Bearcats fumbled on their opening possession of the third before seeing Tony Milano miss a 38-yard field goal. Miami lost yardage on the ensuing possession and Cincinnati got within range again, but Milano's 36-yard attempt was blocked on the second play of the fourth quarter to preserve the scoreless tie.
A pass interference call helped the Bearcats finally get deep into RedHawks' territory later in the quarter, and Williams plowed through the right side of the line to break the deadlock with 4:55 remaining. Boucher was picked off on the first play of the next drive and Kay finished a quick five-play drive with the clincher.
