Texas Tech 33, Texas State 7: Freshman Davis Webb took over at quarterback for the second straight game and threw for 310 yards and two touchdowns to help lift the host Red Raiders.
Webb replaced freshman Baker Mayfield after Texas Tech (4-0, 1-0 Big 12) went without a touchdown on its first four drives. Webb completed 19-of-43 passes, including two second-half touchdowns that helped put away Texas State.
Robert Lowe rushed for 103 yards on seven carries for Texas State (2-1), which managed just 133 yards through the air. The Bobcats had first-and-goal at the 1-yard line twice in the first half, but quarterback Tyler Arndt was intercepted to end the first threat and the offense was stopped on fourth down to end the second.
Texas State also fumbled inside its 20-yard line, leading to a 9-yard return for a touchdown by Will Smith and a 10-0 Texas Tech lead early in the second quarter. Webb then came on for Mayfield, failed to produce points on his first three drives but then escaped pressure to complete a 44-yarder to Sadale Foster, setting up a 21-yard field goal by Ryan Bustin with 20 seconds left in the first half.
Lowe scored on a 49-yard run on Texas State’s opening possession of the second half, but Eric Ward came back with a one-handed 4-yard touchdown catch from Webb to extend Texas Tech's lead to 20-7. Webb later hooked up with Bradley Marquez on a 10-yard scoring strike that pushed the lead to 30-7 with 12:57 left in the game.
