No. 17 Miami 77, Savannah State 7: Ryan Williams threw for two touchdowns in relief of an injured Stephen Morris while Dallas Crawford scored three times as the Hurricanes scored the most points in school history.
Morris connected with Allen Hurns for an 80-yard touchdown on Miami’s second drive of the game before appearing to sprain his right ankle with 8:51 left in the first quarter. Even without their senior quarterback, the Hurricanes (3-0) scored a touchdown on 10 of their first 11 possessions en route to breaking the school record of 75 points against Fordham in 1954.
DeQuan Daniels broke loose for a 75-yard score on his only carry of the game to account for the only score for the Tigers (1-3).
Duke Johnson returned the opening kickoff 96 yards and Crawford scored on the next play before Morris hit Hurns on their long scoring strike. Johnson finished off the next drive with a 2-yard off-tackle run to stake Miami to a 21-0 advantage.
Williams, who went for 11-for-13 for 176 yards, capped off the next two drives with scoring passes of 5 yards to Crawford and 25 yards to Stacy Coley. Crawford converted from 16 yards out with 7:19 remaining in the second quarter and Gus Edwards scored from a yard out on the next drive to push the Hurricanes’ advantage to 49-0 at the break.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Morris left the field under his own power and was checked out by trainers on the sideline. X-rays on his ankle were negative. … Savannah State has been outscored 220-19 in its three losses. … With Miami holding a 77-7 lead after three quarters, the teams agreed to a 12-minute final stanza.
