Texas-San Antonio 32, Texas-El Paso 13: Eric Soza’s 17-yard touchdown pass to Cole Hubble just before halftime capped a stretch of 18 straight points and the visiting Roadrunners defeated the Miners in the Conference USA opener for both teams.
Soza was 18-of-24 for 204 yards for Texas-San Antonio (2-2, 1-0), which held the Miners to 218 total yards in its first-ever Conference USA game. The Roadrunners led 25-13 before David Glasco II scored on a 17-yard touchdown run with 2:45 remaining to seal the victory.
After compiling 945 total yards in its first two games, Texas-El Paso (1-2, 0-1) was limited to 119 passing yards and was 6-of-15 on third-down conversions. Freshman Aaron Jones, who averaged 112 yards rushing in his first two games, had 10 carries for 28 yards.
UTSA scored on its first possession when Brandon Armstrong capped a seven-play, 75-yard drive with a 29-yard touchdown run, but the Miners’ Autrey Golden tied the game when he returned the ensuing kickoff 100 yards for a score. Anthony Puente had a team-high 10 tackles for UTEP, which lost its fourth straight conference opener.
Jay Mattox's 28-yard field goal gave the Miners a 10-7 lead with 1:28 left in the first quarter before the Roadrunners responded with 18 consecutive points. Kam Jones put the Roadrunners ahead 15-10 when he capped an 8-play, 80-yard drive with a 28-yard touchdown run with 12:18 left in the second quarter.
