No. 10 UCLA 62, No. 12 Arizona State 27: Brett Hundley accounted for five touchdowns and Ishmael Adams returned a kickoff and interception for scores as the visiting Bruins swept aside a slow start in winning their Pac-12 opener.
Hundley completed 18-of-23 passes for 355 yards and four touchdowns and ran for another 72 yards and a score as UCLA (4-0, 1-0) surged ahead behind 28 consecutive points in the second and third quarters. Jordan Payton caught five passes for 151 yards and two touchdowns and Paul Perkins rushed for 137 yards as the Bruins recorded four touchdowns of 80 yards or more.
Arizona State quarterback Mike Bercovici filled in for the injured Taylor Kelly and completed 42-of-68 passes for 488 yards and three touchdowns but was intercepted twice. Jaelen Strong was the top target for Bercovici, catching 12 passes for 146 yards, but the Sun Devils (3-1, 1-1) were stung by four turnovers, including three in the first half.
The Bruins scored 21 unanswered points to close out the first half and took a 27-17 lead into the locker room. UCLA took its first lead at 20-17 on a 3-yard touchdown pass off a play action from Hundley to fullback Nate Iese and Adams followed with a 95-yard interception return in the final seconds of the half to extend the lead to 10.
The Bruins needed 19 seconds to add to their lead in the second half as Hundley connected with a wide-open Payton for an 80-yard score and a 34-17 lead. After the Sun Devils pulled within 14 on the second field goal of the game for Zane Gonzalez, Adams returned the ensuing kickoff 100 yards for a score, extending the lead to 41-20.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Arizona State RB D.J. Foster, who came in with six straight games of at least 100 yards from scrimmage, finished with 30 yards rushing and 68 yards receiving. … UCLA K Ka’imi Fairbairn went 2-for-2 on field goals and has connected on 20 straight from 35 yards or closer. … The Bruins improved to 20-0 under coach Jim Mora when leading at halftime.
