Texas Christian 48, Southern Methodist 17: Ty Slanina had the go-ahead score and finished with 63 receiving yards on only three receptions as the Horned Frogs knocked off the Mustangs at home.
Trevone Boykin hit Slanina for the 20-yard score on 3rd-and-18 late in the third quarter. Boykin, who was 15-of-26 for 228 yards, found Ja'Juan Story on a short pass to open the fourth quarter and the sophomore wide receiver took it 56 yards for a score to give the Texas Christian (2-2) a comfortable lead on its way to claiming a second consecutive Iron Skillet trophy in the rivalry with Southern Methodist.
Garrett Gilbert capped a 13-play drive with a 1-yard touchdown pass to Jeremy Johnson to give the Mustangs (1-3) an early lead. A former Gatorade Player of the Year in high school, Gilbert, who finished 23-of-44 for 276 yards and four interceptions, added a touchdown pass to Darius Joseph in the final minutes of the game.
The Horned Frogs answered the opponent's opening score with a 9-play, 70-yard drive that culminated in a 2-yard touchdown run by Waymon James. After Jaden Oberkrom missed a 42-yard field goal, Chase Hover connected from 34 yards out for Southern Methodist to give the Mustangs a 10-7 advantage.
Oberkrom knotted the game at 10 with a 34-yard field goal in the third quarter, and B.J. Catalon followed up Boykin's touchdown strikes with a 6-yard scoring run for TCU, which held the Mustangs to 16 yards rushing on 31 carries. Oberkrom tacked on a field goal from 26 yards, and LaDarius Brown and Sam Carter had touchdowns on returns for the Horned Frogs.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Sophomore DE Devonte Fields, the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year last season, did not play for TCU due to a foot injury. ... Senior DB Chris Parks forced and recovered a fumble that led to the Mustangs first touchdown. ... The two teams combined for seven turnovers, five of which were by Southern Methodist.
