No. 15 Miami (Fla.) 49, South Florida 21: Stephen Morris threw for 222 yards and two touchdowns in a little over one quarter of action as the visiting Hurricanes rolled over the Bulls.
Morris completed 11-of-16 passes, including scoring strikes to Herb Waters and Stacy Coley, before aggravating an ankle injury and sitting out the rest of the game. Coley gained 96 yards on four receptions and scored a pair of touchdowns for Miami (4-0), which is off to its best start since 2004 when it won its first six games.
Marcus Shaw ran for 127 yards and a touchdown for South Florida (0-4), which gave up 540 total yards. Penn State transfer Steven Bench, making his first start for the Bulls, completed 13-of-27 passes for 189 yards – most of it in the second half -- including a touchdown pass in the final seconds.
Shaw’s 3-yard touchdown run tied the game with 9:22 left in the first quarter after Miami had scored on their first possession. The Hurricanes took charge with two more scoring drives that included Morris’ 19-yard pass to Waters over the middle and a 34-yard strike to Coley in the back of the end zone.
Miami's Duke Johnson fumbled at the South Florida 1-yard line early in the second quarter, but Bench coughed the ball up three plays later and Jimmy Gaines recovered for a touchdown. Johnson’s 4-yard run in the second quarter extended his touchdown streak to eight games and the Hurricanes led 35-7 at halftime.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Miami RB Dallas Crawford scored once in each half and leads the team with six touchdowns – five on runs. … South Florida gave up its sixth defensive touchdown of the season and scored their first on DE Julius Forte’s 11-yard interception return in the fourth quarter. … Miami have won five of six meetings with the Bulls, including all three at South Florida.
