No. 20 Washington 31, Arizona 13: Bishop Sankey rushed for 161 yards and a touchdown on a school-record 40 carries to help the Huskies to a Pac-12 win over the visiting Wildcats to equal their best start since 2001.
Keith Price passed for two touchdowns and guided Washington (4-0, 1-0) on two scoring drives of 90 or more yards in the third quarter. Sean Parker and Marcus Peters each had interceptions for the Huskies.
Ka’Deem Carey rushed for 132 yards and a score on a career-best 30 attempts for Arizona (3-1, 0-1), which dug itself an 11-point deficit in the first 16 minutes and was unable to recover. B.J. Denker was 14-of-35 passing for 119 yards and the two picks.
The Huskies led 11-6 at halftime and came out strong in the third quarter with a 14-play, 95-yard drive capped by Price’s 1-yard pass to Austin Seferian-Jenkins. Arizona pulled within five later in the stanza on Denker’s 7-yard touchdown run but Washington answered with a 10-play, 90-yard drive with Sankey scoring from a yard out with 1:25 left in the third and put the game away with Jesse Callier’s 2-yard run with 3:34 remaining.
Price hit Keith Smith on a 7-yard scoring pass in the first quarter and the lead increased to 8-0 when Arizona punter Drew Riggleman was unable to catch a punt snap in pouring rain and the ball rolled out of the end zone for a safety. Travis Coons booted a 42-yard field goal 49 seconds into the second quarter and the Wildcats finally got on the board on Carey’s 3-yard run six seconds before halftime.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Huskies outgained the Wildcats 409-318. … Carey, who topped 100 yards for the seventh straight game, also caught four passes for 49 yards. … Former NFL standout Corey Dillon held the Washington school mark for carries, rushing 38 times against Washington State in 1996.
