No. 19 Florida 24, Kentucky 7: Matt Jones rushed for a career-high 176 yards and a touchdown to lead the visiting Gators in a Southeastern Conference clash.
Tyler Murphy made his first career start and completed 15-of-18 passes for 156 yards and a touchdown and ran for another score for Florida (3-1, 2-0 SEC). Murphy completed his first 13 passes before he was intercepted on Florida’s opening drive of the second half.
Kentucky (1-3, 0-1 SEC) was limited to 173 total yards. Wildcat kicker Joe Mansour led the team in rushing with 25 yards.
The Gators went 93 yards on 13 plays on the game’s opening drive and took a 7-0 lead on a 2-yard touchdown run by Jones. Kentucky lined up for 43-yard field goal on its first possession, but Mansour took a pitch out from the holder and scampered 25 yards for a touchdown.
Murphy completed all 11 of his pass attempts in the first half, including a 9-yard scoring strike to Trey Burton with 9:40 left in the second quarter to snap the tie. Murphy added a 5-yard touchdown run with 2:53 remaining in the half to extend the lead to 21-7.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Florida has won 27 consecutive games against Kentucky, the longest active winning streak among major opponents in an annual series. … The Gators entered the game leading the nation in third-down defense (18.9 percent) and held the Wildcats to 1-for-8 on third down. … Kentucky came into the game averaging 490 yards of offense this season.
