Syracuse 14, Pittsburgh 13: Adonis Ameen-Moore had a touchdown run and Dyshawn Davis returned a fumble 52 yards for a score as host Syracuse ended a seven-game losing streak to future ACC rival Pittsburgh.
Syracuse (2-3, 1-0 Big East) also ended an eight-game losing streak to FBS opponents dating back to a victory over then-No. 15 West Virginia last October.
The final Big East meeting between the schools, who will continue their rivalry in the ACC next season, was a defensive struggle. Both teams were coming off a bye week and the rust showed.
The Orange did little after driving 70 yards in eight plays for a touchdown on their first possession. The biggest play came from their defense, as Davis' 52-yard fumble return late in the first quarter gave Syracuse a 14-0 lead.
Pittsburgh (2-3, 0-2) cut the Syracuse lead to 14-13 on Kevin Harper's second field goal - a 27-yarder with 1:57 left in the third - but a pair offensive miscues prevented it from taking the lead late. The Panthers drove to the Syracuse 17-yard line with under seven minutes left in the fourth quarter before the drive fizzled out thanks to an intentional grounding penalty and a sack.
The Orange took over with just under five minutes remaining and ran out the clock.
GAME NOTEBOOK: A hush fell over the crowd late in the fourth quarter when Syracuse safety Shamarko Thomas was shaken up by a vicious helmet-to-helmet hit. Thomas walked off under his own power. ... Syracuse converted a 4th-and-9 from the Pittsburgh 33-yard-line midway through the second quarter, but the drive ended when K'Waun Williams intercepted Ryan Nassib in the end zone. It was the Orange's fifth turnover in the red zone this season. ,,, Hall of Fame Washington Redskins receiver Art Monk, who starred at Syracuse from 1977-79, was honored at halftime.
