Ball State 48, Virginia 27: Jahwan Edwards rushed for three touchdowns for the third consecutive week as the visiting Cardinals rallied from an early 10-point deficit.
Edwards finished with 155 yards rushing and Keith Wenning passed for 346 yards and two scores for Ball State (5-1), which trailed 17-7 early in the second quarter before finding its stride offensively. The Cardinals, who came in averaging 40 points, have scored 48 points or more three times in six games.
Kevin Parks rushed for 104 yards and two touchdowns for the Cavaliers (2-3), which committed four turnovers and 13 penalties. Virginia has dropped three of its past four.
Edwards’ second touchdown, a 32-yard scamper with 1:26 left in the third quarter, snapped a 24-all tie, and the Cardinals extended their advantage to 34-24 on Scott Secor’s 45-yard field goal with 14:52 remaining. Virginia pulled within 34-27 on Alec Vozenilek’s 38-yard field goal with 10:41 to go, but Wenning’s 72-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Williams down the right sideline 39 seconds later made it 41-27 Cardinals.
The Cavaliers took a 17-7 lead on David Watford’s 27-yard touchdown run 19 seconds into the second quarter. Ball State rallied to within 17-10 on Secor’s 21-yard field goal with 11:48 left in the first half, and Wenning’s 11-yard touchdown pass to Willie Snead with 5:49 left forged a tie a 17.
GAME NOTEBOOK: A Virginia penalty for an ineligible receiver downfield with 14:35 remaining nullified a 79-yard touchdown pass that would have brought the Cavaliers within 34-30. … Williams caught nine passes for 159 yards and Snead added 104 receiving yards on six catches. … Edwards scored on a 3-yard run in the first quarter and added a 17-yard score with 5:15 left.
