No 14 Miami (Fla.) 45, Georgia Tech 30: Stephen Morris passed for three touchdowns and Duke Johnson rushed for 184 yards as the host Hurricanes rallied from a 17-7 deficit to win their ACC opener.
Miami (5-0, 1-0 ACC) overcame four turnovers, finishing with 551 yards of total offense. Morris completed 17-of-22 passes for 324 yards and Dallas Crawford added a pair of fourth-quarter touchdown runs.
David Sims rushed for two touchdowns for Georgia Tech (3-2, 2-2), which lost its second in a row. Sims’ 6-yard scoring run with 10:38 left pulled the Yellow Jackets within 24-23, but Harrison Butker missed the extra point wide left.
Miami took a 24-17 lead with 1:44 left in the third quarter when Morris hit Allen Hurns on the left sideline on third-and-15, and Hurns slipped a tackle en route to a 69-yard touchdown. After Butker’s extra-point miss, the Hurricanes scored on two Crawford touchdown runs to build a 38-23 advantage.
Sims and Charles Perkins scored on first-quarter runs as the Yellow Jackets took a 17-7 lead after one quarter. The Hurricanes rallied in the final nine minutes of the first half, with Morris throwing a 4-yard touchdown pass to Clive Walford with 8:22 left and Matt Goudis’ 24-yard field goal with 29 seconds left to tie the game at 17 at halftime.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Miami trailed for the first time this season. … Butker had converted his first 20 extra-point attempts of the season. … Johnson did not score a touchdown for the first time in nine games.
