No. 5 Stanford 31, No. 18 Washington 28: Ty Montgomery had a career-high 290 all-purpose yards and accounted for two scores as Stanford edged the visiting Huskies for their 13th straight victory.
Montgomery returned the opening kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown and caught a 39-yard pass with 11 seconds left in the second quarter to put Stanford ahead 17-7. Tyler Gaffney added 72 rushing yards and a touchdown for the Cardinal (5-0, 3-0 Pac-12), who avenged a 17-13 loss at Washington last season.
Bishop Sankey had 27 carries for 125 yards and two touchdowns for the Huskies (4-1, 1-1), who trailed 17-14 after Keith Price capped the opening drive of the second half with a 29-yard scoring strike to Kevin Smith. Stanford answered five minutes later with a 4-yard TD run by Kevin Hogan, who threw for 100 yards and a touchdown and added 37 rushing yards.
Sankey’s 15-yard TD run cut the deficit to 24-21 with 2:26 left in the third quarter, but Montgomery returned the ensuing kickoff 68 yards and Gaffney scored on an 11-yard run to slow Washington’s momentum.
Price, who completed 33-of-48 passes for 350 yards, was intercepted at the Stanford 5-yard line with 5:37 remaining before throwing a 1-yard TD pass to Jaydon Mickens to pull the Huskies within three points with 2:38 to play. Washington was stopped on downs with 35 seconds left after video replay reversed the officials’ call of a completed pass on fourth-and-10.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Cardinal improved to 33-3 at Stanford Stadium since the final home game of 2007. … Hogan improved to 10-0 as a starter for Stanford, which won despite being out-gained 489-279 in total yards. … Kasen Williams had five catches for 89 yards for the Huskies, who have lost seven of their last nine games against the Cardinal.
