Western Kentucky 31, Troy 26: Kawaun Jakes passed for 255 yards and three touchdowns and Kadeem Jones scored twice as the visiting Hilltoppers recorded their fourth straight victory by dispatching the Trojans in Sun Belt Conference play.
Jones put Western Kentucky (5-1, 2-0) ahead to stay on a 1-yard run early in the third quarter and caught an 18-yard scoring pass from Jakes later in the period as the Hilltoppers held off Troy (3-3, 2-2) to win their ninth consecutive Sun Belt contest.
Backup quarterback Deon Anthony threw a 47-yard scoring pass to Eric Thomas to pull Troy within 28-26 with four seconds left in the third quarter but the ensuing two-point conversion pass fell incomplete. Western Kentucky’s Garrett Schwettman kicked a 26-yard field goal with 1:12 to play and Troy’s final drive ended on an incompletion with 20 seconds left.
Troy scored 10 points in the first 5 1/2 minutes of the game on a 33-yard field goal by Will Scott and a 38-yard scoring pass from Corey Robinson to Chip Reeves. Robinson suffered a head injury on the final play of the first half and didn’t return.
Jakes threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Mitchell Henry late in the first quarter to get the Hilltoppers on the board. The Trojans pushed the lead to 17-7 when holder Jaquon Robinson tossed a 1-yard shovel pass to D.J. Taylor on a fake field goal with 8:02 left in the half.
