No. 7 West Virginia 48, No. 9 Texas 45: Geno Smith completed 25 of 35 passes for 268 yards and four touchdowns as West Virginia outlasted host Texas.
Sophomore running back Andrew Buie rushed for two touchdowns and a career-high 207 yards on 31 carries and Stedman Bailey caught three scoring passes for the Mountaineers (5-0, 2-0 Big 12), who were playing their first Big 12 road game.
The Longhorns (4-1, 1-1) took a 28-27 lead into the half and went back-and-forth after the break, taking their final lead at 38-34 when Joe Bergeron rushed for the last of his four touchdowns with 29 seconds left in the third quarter. Smith found Bailey for a diving touchdown catch less than five minutes later to move West Virginia back on top. Bailey had five touchdown receptions in West Virginia's 70-63 victory over Baylor last week.
Texas had a chance to take the lead late, when Smith was stripped by Alex Okafor deep in Longhorns territory. Two rushing plays got them within eight yards of the end zone, but David Ash had a shotgun snap sail past him for an 18-yard loss and Anthony Fera missed a 41-yard field goal that would have tied it.
Smith seized that opportunity and marched the Mountaineers right back down the field, eating up 4:07 in eight plays before Buie took it in for a 4-yard score to make it 48-38 with 1:18 left.
