No. 14 Oregon State 42, BYU 24: Backup quarterback Cody Vaz threw three touchdowns in his first career start and Markus Wheaton scored a career-best three touchdowns as the visiting Beavers matched their best start in 73 years.

Vaz, a junior making his first start since high school in place of injured starter Sean Mannion, scorched the nation’s 12th-ranked pass defense for 332 yards as Oregon State improved to 5-0 for the first time since 1939.

Brandin Cooks helped his new quarterback’s cause with eight catches for 173 yards, while Wheaton was on the receiving end of each of Vaz’s first two TD passes and added a late rushing score on a reverse.

With the score tied at 21 early in the fourth quarter, Oregon State took the lead for good when Vaz’s pass was deflected but landed in the waiting arms of tight end Colby Prince as he blocked out a defender in the end zone.

BYU (4-3) trimmed the lead to 28-24 before Wheaton’s 12-yard run and a late interception return by Jordan Poyer for a touchdown off another deflection accounted for the final margin.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Oregon State RB Storm Woods left the game in the third quarter with a knee sprain and did not return. … After being shut out in his first two games, Poyer has intercepted five passes over the last three games. … The Beavers’ offense totaled 450 yards, ending BYU’s 12-game streak of holding opponents to less than 300 total yards.
