No. 14 Texas A&M 57, Texas-El Paso 7: Johnny Manziel passed for 273 yards and four touchdowns as the host Aggies cleaned up on the Miners in the nonconference game.
Manziel, who totaled 59 rushing yards in the previous two games as he dealt with a shoulder injury, added a team-high 67 yards on the ground on seven carries and scored twice. Travis Labhart, a senior walk-on who entered the game with one career touchdown reception, had four catches for 82 yards and two scores for Texas A&M (7-2).
Texas-El Paso (1-7) managed 198 total yards. Blaire Sullivan, filling in for injured starter Jameill Showers, completed 9-of-17 passes for 71 yards, and Aaron Jones, who came in leading all FBS freshmen with 106.1 rushing yards a game, added 62 yards and a TD for the Miners.
UTEP surrendered a safety on the opening possession of the game, but forced a three-and-out and then took a 7-2 lead on a 4-yard TD run by Jones. The Aggies responded by scoring the next 34 points of the half, 21 off turnovers.
Manziel started the run with a 44-yard touchdown pass to Labhart before the Aggies blew the game open by scoring 27 points in the second quarter. Manziel closed the half by tossing a 17-yard scoring strike to Labhart.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Texas A&M RB Tra Carson, who rushed for a second-quarter TD, was carted off the field on a backboard early in the fourth quarter after suffering a neck injury. … Texas A&M WR Mike Evans, who entered the game second in the FBS at 137.6 receiving yards a game, had one catch for one yard in the first half before finishing with four catches for 46 yards and a TD. … Manziel has passed for 2,867 yards and 26 TDs through nine games this season after amassing 2,527 yards and 16 TDs through the same span last season en route to winning the Heisman Trophy.
