Virginia 41, Miami (Fla.) 40: Michael Rocco threw four touchdown passes, including a 10-yard strike to tight end Jake McGee with 6 seconds left, as the Cavaliers defeated the visiting Hurricanes.
Rocco was 29-of-37 for 300 yards and took the Cavaliers (4-6, 2-4 ACC) on an 87-yard drive in 16 plays to win their second straight after six consecutive losses. McGee leapt in the back of the end zone and got one foot down for his fifth touchdown of the season.
Freshman running back Duke Johnson rushed for 150 yards, threw for a score and ran a kick back 95 yards for another for Miami (5-5, 4-3), which lost its third straight to Virginia. Miami quarterback Stephen Morris threw three touchdown passes, including second-half strikes to Clive Walford and Phillip Dorsett to give the Hurricanes a 38-28 lead.
Rocco threw his second touchdown pass to Darius Jennings, this one from 5 yards, to bring Virginia within 38-35 with 5:33 left. Rocco was called for intentional grounding in the end zone with 4:19 remaining, but the Cavaliers’ defense held and gave him one more chance.
Allen Hurns caught a pair of touchdown passes, one each from Morris and Johnson, in the first half as the Hurricanes battled their way to a 24-21 lead. Virginia scored touchdowns on four of its first five possessions to take a 28-24 halftime lead.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Miami was without three starters on defense. LB Eddie Johnson was suspended for violating team rules, while LB Denzel Perryman and S Deon Bush were held out with injuries. … Rocco set a school record with 18 straight completions. … Johnson had 216 yards on kickoff returns. … Virginia’s Dominique Terrell had nine catches for 127 yards.
