Utah State 48, No. 19 Louisiana Tech 41 (OT): Kerwynn Williams capped a big day with a 4-yard touchdown run in overtime and Chuckie Keeton totaled four touchdowns as the visiting Aggies held off the Bulldogs to clinch the Western Athletic Conference.
Williams rushed for 162 yards and two touchdowns and caught four passes for 125 yards and a score for Utah State (9-2, 5-0 WAC), which held a 41-17 lead with 1:00 left in the third quarter and had to hang on against the nation’s top-ranked offense.
Colby Cameron passed for 396 yards and a touchdown but was intercepted twice for Louisiana Tech (9-2, 4-1), which was the last hope among non-automatic qualifiers to reach a BCS bowl game.
Williams broke for a 13-yard rushing gain on the first play of overtime and caught an 8-yard pass from Keeton on the second before scoring on the third. The Bulldogs were stopped on fourth-and-3 on their lone overtime chance.
The Aggies came into the contest with a top 10 defense and held Louisiana Tech early, limiting it to a field goal in the first half. The Bulldogs finally exploded in late the third quarter, when D.J. Banks returned a kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown to start a string of 24 unanswered points, culminating on a 32-yard field goal by Matt Nelson to force overtime with no time left.
