Memphis 42, Southern Mississippi 24: Brandon Hayes rushed for 115 yards and two touchdowns and Jai Steib also rushed for two scores as the host Tigers routed the Golden Eagles in Conference USA play.
Jacob Karam threw two touchdown passes to Alan Cross as Memphis (4-8, 4-4) finished the season on a three-game winning streak.
Southern Mississippi (0-12, 0-8) went winless in Ellis Johnson’s first season as coach, one year after the program went 12-2 and won the Conference USA crown under Larry Fedora.
Steib rushed for two touchdowns during Memphis’ 21-point second quarter as the Tigers took a 21-10 halftime lead. Karam hit Cross for a 1-yard score during the stanza and again connected with him on a 38-yard touchdown to make it 35-10 with 9:49 left in the third quarter.
Anthony Alford threw two touchdown passes in the final quarter for Southern Mississippi. Quentin Pierce caught a 9-yarder and Tyre Bracken hauled in a 26-yard scoring reception.
