Lamar @ Baylor preview

McLane Stadium

Baylor's offense was in midseason form in Week 1 - particularly in the second half - and the fourth-ranked Bears will aim to continue their non-conference assault when they host FCS squad Lamar on Saturday. Baylor put up incredible offensive numbers in 2014, including national-best figures in points (48.2), total offense (581.5) and first downs (30.1) and picked up where they left off in their 2015 opener.

The Bears averaged 10.48 yards per play - the highest mark in school history - in last weekend's 56-21 victory against SMU. Seth Russell threw five touchdowns and ran for another in a performance that All-American tackle Spencer Drango called "unbelievable." Russell (435 total yards), Jay Lee (three touchdown catches) and Corey Coleman (178 receiving yards, TD) will again be in the spotlight for a Bears team that must take advantage of a soft non-conference schedule. Baylor has been criticized publicly for its non-league slate and should have few problems dealing with a Lamar squad that rolled in its season opener.

ABOUT LAMAR (1-0): The Cardinals breezed to a 66-3 triumph against NAIA Bacone last Saturday in their season opener. Joe Minden passed for three touchdowns, Carson Earp threw for a pair of scores, and Lamar added 264 rushing yards in a game where the coaches agreed at halftime to shorten the third and fourth quarters to 10 minutes apiece. Lamar also enjoyed a terrific defensive performance in its season debut, holding Bacone to 82 total yards (27 passing).

ABOUT BAYLOR (1-0): The Bears struggled somewhat defensively, especially in the first half, of their season opener. SMU dual threat quarterback Matt Davis enjoyed plenty of success both through the air and on the ground against the Baylor defense - a legitimate concern for a squad that gave up 115 points over its final three games last season. In fairness, Baylor was without two starters (defensive end Shawn Oakman and safety Orion Stewart), who were suspended for the opener for violating unspecified team rules.

EXTRA POINTS

1. Baylor is 25-1 at home since 2011.

2. The Bears have won 10 straight games against in-state opponents, although they haven't played Lamar since 1981.

3. Baylor has scored at least 40 points in 36 of its last 46 games.

PREDICTION: Baylor 68, Lamar 17
