Blake Bortles threw a pair touchdowns and directed six scoring drives as the host Jacksonville Jaguars recorded a 31-12 victory over the New York Jets on Sunday afternoon.
The Jaguars rebounded from a 9-6 home loss to Tennessee the previous week. Bortles completed 29 of 38 passes for 388 yards with one interception, helping Jacksonville improve to 3-1 for the first time since 2007.
He connected with T.J. Yeldon and Donte Moncrief for his touchdowns and guided four other drives leading to three field goals for Josh Lambo and a touchdown run by Yeldon in the final minute.
Lambo made field goals of 32 and 22 yards before booting a 54-yarder late in the first half.
Ten Jacksonville players caught at least one pass, including Dede Westbrook, who totaled a career-high 130 yards on nine catches. Moncrief added 109 yards on five catches as the Jaguars totaled 503 yards.
The Jaguars won despite losing running back Leonard Fournette to hamstring tightness and center Brandon Linder to a back injury. Fournette returned after missing the previous two games and finished with 30 yards on 11 carries before exiting in the second quarter.
Rookie quarterback Sam Darnold struggled as the Jets lost their third straight. Darnold completed 17 of 34 passes for 167 yards and threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Leggett in the fourth quarter.
Jason Myers kicked a pair of second-half field goals for the Jets, who mustered 178 yards and maintained possession for only 22:25.
Bortles completed his first 11 passes and 16 of his first 19 as Jacksonville took a 16-0 lead into halftime.
Lambo's first field goal made it 3-0 with 3:41 remaining in the first quarter, and his second made it 6-0 with 9:28 left in the second. The Jaguars scored their first touchdown when Yeldon was wide open, caught a screen pass a few yards from the line of scrimmage and raced untouched into the right side of the end zone with 1:47 left before the break.
After the Jets failed to score in the red zone on two short-yardage plays, Lambo then kicked his third field goal with 29 seconds to play before halftime.
The Jaguars extended the lead to 18-0 when Calais Campbell and Marcell Dareus tackled running back Isaiah Crowell in the end zone with 12:27 remaining in the third.
The Jets scored on Myers' first field goal with 4:58 remaining in the third. A little over a minute later, Moncrief raced down the right sideline to make it 25-3.
After Myers kicked his second field goal, Avery Williamson stripped Yeldon at the Jacksonville 30. Trumaine Johnson recovered and returned it 25 yards, and the Jets cut it to 25-12 on Leggett's catch with 11:18 remaining.
