Jets 18, Buccaneers 17: Nick Folk kicked a 48-yard field goal with two seconds remaining in the fourth quarter as host New York won its season opener and spoiled Darrelle Revis' return.
With Geno Smith scrambling along the sideline, Tampa Bay linebacker Lavonte David inexplicably shoved the rookie quarterback well out of bounds to draw a 15-yard penalty. The infraction move the Jets into field-goal range and Folk drilled the ball between the uprights to send New York (1-0) to an improbable victory.
Smith also benefited from a Buccaneers' drive-extending holding penalty on third down before finishing off a 14-play stretch to set up Folk's 30-yard field goal. The boot gave the Jets a 15-14 lead with 5:05 remaining.
Smith, who completed 24-of-38 passes for 256 yards, tossed a 7-yard touchdown strike to Kellen Winslow just before halftime. The former Tampa Bay tight end led the Jets with seven receptions and 79 yards.
Josh Freeman was wildly inconsistent for Tampa Bay (0-1), but found a reliable target in Vincent Jackson (seven receptions, 154 yards). The pair hooked up on the Buccaneers' final drive, with Jackson using a spin move before bolting upfield for a 37-yard reception. Rian Lindell gave Tampa Bay a 17-15 lead after sailing his 37-yard field goal between the uprights with 34 seconds left.
