Chiefs 41, Patriots 14: Jamaal Charles ran for 92 yards and a touchdown and caught a pair of scoring passes as host Kansas City crushed New England.
Alex Smith went 20-of-26 for 248 yards and three touchdowns for the Chiefs (2-2), who forced three turnovers on defense while controlling both sides of the ball. Tight end Travis Kelce caught eight passes for 93 yards and a TD, Knile Davis ran for 107 yards and Husain Abdullah returned an interception for a score for Kansas City.
The Patriots (2-2) punted on each of their first five possessions and turned the ball over on the next two as Tom Brady struggled to 14-of-23 for 159 yards, one TD and two interceptions. Brandon LaFell (six catches, 119 yards) had his first TD reception of the season but it came with New England already trailing by 27 points in the third quarter.
Charles burst through for a 2-yard TD to get things started with 2:15 left in the first quarter and capped a three-play, 86-yard drive with a 5-yard scoring catch on the next drive to help the Chiefs take a 17-0 lead into the break. Brady was sacked and fumbled early in the third and Smith needed only two plays to find Charles for an 8-yard TD.
Brady was intercepted on the ensuing drive, leading to a Kansas City field goal, before the Patriots finally got on the board when LaFell caught a short pass and broke a tackle before racing 44 yards for a score. Smith and Kelce hooked up on a 2-yard score with 11:52 left and Abdullah returned an interception for a 39-yard TD 78 seconds later to end Brady’s night.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The 303 yards allowed by the Patriots in the first half marked the most the team has given up before the break in the Bill Belichick era. … New England rookie QB Jimmy Garoppolo finished off the game and hit Rob Gronkowski with a 13-yard TD pass – the first of his career. … Kansas City WR Donnie Avery left in the second half with a groin injury and did not return.
