Darnell Nurse scored 17 seconds into overtime and the visiting Edmonton Oilers defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-2 Monday night to gain a split of a two-game set.

After Mike Smith stopped Auston Matthews nine seconds into overtime, the Oilers came back the other way. Connor McDavid set up Nurse on a two-on-one and the defenseman shot from the slot for his 12th goal of the season.

Josh Archibald and Kyle Turris also scored for the Oilers.

The season series between the teams ended with Toronto winning six of the nine games.

Mitchell Marner had a goal and an assist for the Maple Leafs. Matthews added a goal. Justin Holl had two assists.

Smith stopped 29 shots for Edmonton and Michael Hutchinson made 20 saves for Toronto.

Toronto led 2-1 after one period after Edmonton scored the first goal.

Archibald beat defenseman Morgan Rielly to a puck in the Maple Leaf zone, broke clear and scored his sixth goal of the season on the backhand at 6:15.

Marner tied the game with his 13th goal this season at 7:59. He took a long pass from Zach Hyman at the blue line and worked the puck from the left circle into the low slot for the shot.

Matthews scored his 23rd goal of the season at 11:08 on a high shot from the lower right circle.

Toronto had a 13-6 advantage in shots on goal after the first period.

Smith made a big save on Ilya Mikheyev, who tried to finish off a two-on-one break with Alexander Kerfoot five minutes into the second period.

Toronto's power play drought reached 0-for-19 after it did not get a shot on goal as Edmonton killed off a second-period penalty.

Toronto led 20-15 in shots on goal after two periods.

Turris deflected a shot by Adam Larsson to tie the game at 1:20 of the third period. It was his second goal of the season.

Toronto's John Tavares hit the crossbar with a shot nine minutes into the third.
