The Winnipeg Jets have sputtered at both ends of the ice while splitting their first 12 contests, but enter a three-game road trip starting Tuesday at the Anaheim Ducks after a thrilling overtime victory in the Heritage Classic. The Jets downed Calgary 2-1 Saturday on Bryan Little’s tap-in at 3:04 of the extra period, after fighting back from a 1-0 deficit in front of another strong performance from goaltender Connor Hellebuyck.
“This is a team effort,” Hellebuyck told reporters after recording 29 saves, keeping the deficit at one goal until Josh Morrissey’s game-tying score with 4:11 left in regulation. “We got better as the game went along and we grinded together. We never had a doubt.” Still, Winnipeg has scored just five goals in its past four games and now face the third-stingiest defense in the NHL in the Ducks, who have surrendered 2.38 goals per contest. Anaheim has struggled of late, getting a goal from center Ryan Getzlaf early in the first period Sunday at Vegas before allowing five unanswered scores in a 5-2 defeat, the Ducks’ fourth loss in the past five games. “We’ll reinforce that we’ve had a number of nights that we’ve played well, and for whatever reason, we didn’t have it (Sunday),” Anaheim coach Dallas Eakins told the media after the Ducks were limited to just 15 shots on goal.
TV: 10 p.m. ET, TSN3 (Winnipeg), Prime Ticket (Anaheim)
ABOUT THE JETS (6-6-0): The road trip got off to a rough start Monday when forward Patrik Laine left practice after colliding with newly acquired defenseman Luca Sbisa, and his status for Tuesday is uncertain. Hellebuyck is 2-2-0 in his past four games despite allowing just six goals and posting a .952 save percentage in that span. Defenseman Neal Pionk picked up his sixth assist in 12 games Saturday and has eight points on the season after recording a career-high 26 with the New York Rangers last season.
ABOUT THE DUCKS (7-6-0): Getzlaf, who will play in his 998th career game Tuesday, has scored a goal in three of the past four games to give him five (including three game-winning tallies) in 13 games. Goaltender John Gibson was under pressure throughout Sunday’s game, facing 32 shots through two periods and finishing with 44 saves, one night after Ryan Miller made 35 stops in a victory at Colorado. Center Adam Henrique scored his team-leading seventh goal in the third period - his sixth in his past eight games.
