Nashville @ New York preview
Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum
Last Meeting ( Oct 13, 2018 ) NY Islanders 2, Nashville 5
The New York Islanders have alternated Semyon Varlamov and Thomas Greiss since the start of the season - an enviable situation since they are No. 1 goaltenders. Greiss will be between the pipes when the Islanders host the Nashville Predators on Tuesday after Varlamov made 33 saves in a 3-2 overtime victory over Buffalo on Saturday.
Their statistics are nearly identical as Greiss is 11-4-0 with a 2.16 goals-against average and .932 save percentage while Varlamov is 11-3-2, 2.24, .928. "Right now, I look at the stats … tell me who should I decide on?" New York coach Barry Trotz told reporters. "They're virtually identical and at a high level. Nothing wrong with that. It's a strength of the New York Islanders. If it's someone else's weakness, too bad for them. We're good with it." The Islanders have won three straight and six of their last eight games while Nashville defeated the New York Rangers 5-2 on Monday. The Predators are 6-3-2 since a season-high six-game losing streak as they try to make up ground in the rugged Central Division.
TV: 7 p.m. ET, FS Tennessee (Nashville), MSG Plus (New York)
ABOUT THE PREDATORS (15-12-5): Roman Josi recorded two goals and an assist Monday, increasing his team-high point total to 29 while fellow defensemen Ryan Ellis and Mattias Ekholm also scored. Josi's nine goals trail only Nick Bonino (12), Calle Jarnkrok (11) and Filip Forsberg (11) for the club lead and he's scored in five of his seven multi-point games this season. Pekka Rinne (10-5-3, 2.99, .893) is expected to play Tuesday as he struggles to return to the form that won him the 2018 Vezina Trophy after Juuse Saros stopped 39 shots versus the Rangers.
ABOUT THE ISLANDERS (22-7-2): Anthony Beauvillier recorded a season-high three points Saturday and scored his 10th goal, joining Mathew Barzal (team-most 13) and Brock Nelson (11) as double-digit producers. Barzal has a club-best 27 points while Nelson boasts 25 after recording two assists versus Buffalo, giving him three goals and two assists in his last five games. Nick Leddy (lower body) participated in warmups Saturday but missed his third straight game.
