The San Jose Sharks and Boston Bruins are each sitting in second place in their respective divisions, but both clubs made a move to add some offensive punch prior to Monday's trade deadline. The Sharks acquired Gustav Nyquist from Detroit and the Bruins made a deal with New Jersey for Marcus Johansson in advance of their matchup Tuesday night at Boston's TD Garden.

San Jose is just three points behind first-place Calgary in the Pacific Division entering the finale of a four-game road trip but has dropped five straight to the Bruins following a 6-5 overtime setback on Feb. 18. The Sharks will get a proven scorer in Nyquist, who netted his 16th goal of the season versus San Jose on Sunday hours before the trade was made. First place in the Atlantic is out of reach for Boston, which is riding a 13-game point streak (9-0-4) as it kicks off a six-game homestand. The Bruins may have felt pressure to go after Johansson after learning Monday that leading goal scorer David Pastrnak's injured thumb will be in a cast for at least two more weeks.

ABOUT THE SHARKS (37-18-8): Nyquist, who will be an unrestricted free agent after the season, put together back-to-back seasons of 28 and 27 goals in 2013-15 and scored 21 times last season. "Gustav is a talented, versatile forward who plays with speed and a strong hockey sense," Sharks general manager Doug Wilson said. "His track record of strong play and character speak for themselves and we're very excited to add him to our dressing room." Nyquist may play alongside Joe Thornton, who had a hat trick against the Bruins last week could be playing his last game in Boston -- the team that drafted him No. 1 overall in 1997.

ABOUT THE BRUINS (36-17-9): Johansson scored a career-high 24 goals in 2016-17 but spent two injury-ravaged seasons with New Jersey, including sitting out more than 2 1/2 months when he took an elbow to the head from Boston's Brad Marchand that gave him a concussion. Bruins general manager Don Sweeney said the incident will not be an issue going forward for Johansson, who scored six games and had as many assists over the past 13 games. "We were looking for somebody who would be excited to join our club," Sweeney said. "I think his quick line was, 'I'd much rather be playing with Marchand than against him.'"

OVERTIME

1. Sharks captain Joe Pavelski has six goals and five assists in his last seven games, including one and two versus Boston.

2. Boston signed veteran F Lee Stempniak and assigned him to Providence after he cleared waivers.

3. San Jose acquired F prospect Jonathan Dahlen from Vancouver for F prospect Linus Karlsson on Monday.
