Calgary @ New York preview
Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum
Last Meeting ( Feb 20, 2019 ) NY Islanders 2, Calgary 4
The division-leading Calgary Flames and New York Islanders elected to remain relatively quiet in the face of the considerable noise surrounding the NHL trade deadline. The Flames look to remain hot as they vie for their sixth straight win on Tuesday against the New York Islanders, who return from a trek through Western Canada to begin a five-game homestand.
"Today there is no mourning. The hearse is not driving by, and none of us are climbing in," Calgary general manager Brad Treliving said of the team's relative inactivity at the trade deadline before noting that he was "prepared to go to battle with this group." Austin Czarnik and Mikael Backlund scored in Wednesday's 4-2 win over New York and repeated the feat on Sunday in a 2-1 victory versus Ottawa to begin the team's three-game road trip. While the Flames are nursing a three-point lead over second-place San Jose in the Pacific Division, the Islanders elected to stand pat at the deadline despite seeing their advantage in the Metropolitan whittled to two over Washington. "We weren't going to get into a situation where we sacrificed what our plan is because we feel very good about this hockey team," general manager Lou Lamoriello said. "You don't do something just for the sake of doing it. We're extremely pleased at where we are. This is a collective group that has done an outstanding job together. Our focus is just to go forward with it."
TV: 7 p.m. ET, Sportsnet West (Calgary), MSG-Plus (New York)
ABOUT THE FLAMES (39-16-7): Calgary's lone acquisition prior to the trade deadline was defenseman Oscar Fantenberg, who was obtained from Los Angeles for a conditional fourth-round pick in the 2020 NHL Draft. "When I look at our young defense, we wanted to support them rather than replace them," Treliving said of the decision to acquire the 27-year-old Swede. Fantenberg will have some familiarity with fellow countrymen Mikael Backlund (2016 World Championships), Elias Lindholm (Swedish Elite League) and Rasmus Anderson and Oliver Kylington (AHL) on the Flames' roster.
ABOUT THE ISLANDERS (36-18-7): Casey Cizikas scored his career-high 17th goal of the season in Saturday's 4-0 victory versus Vancouver, with Robin Lehner also setting a personal best with his fourth shutout. The 27-year-old Lehner, who has three blankings in his last 19 games, boasts a 15-3-2 mark in his last 20 and a sizzling 9-2-2 with a 1.74 goals-against average at home this season. Captain Anders Lee scored against Calgary and extended his goal-scoring run to three games before being held off the scoresheet versus the Canucks.
