Last Meeting ( Dec 10, 2017 ) Edmonton 0, Toronto 1
Auston Matthews has been on a blistering tear over the last month, tallying 10 times in a 14-game stretch to become the first player in the history of the Toronto Maple Leafs to score at least 30 goals in each of his first three seasons. Matthews will bid to continue his torrid run on Wednesday when the Maple Leafs conclude their four-game homestand in a marquee matchup against captain Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers.
"I just do what I do. I'm kind of a shoot-first guy, try to score, it's how I've always been," Matthews said after scoring to highlight Toronto's four-goal second period in Monday's 5-3 win versus Buffalo. The 21-year-old remains five goals behind John Tavares for the team lead, with the latter tallying against the Sabres for his 12th point (five goals, seven assists) in 11 games to keep the Maple Leafs hot on the heels of second-place Boston in the Atlantic Division. Edmonton has cobbled together at least a point in four straight contests (2-0-2) following Monday's 3-2 shootout loss in Nashville that signaled the end of McDavid's two-game suspension for his hit to the head of New York Islanders defenseman Nick Leddy. The two-time reigning Art Ross recipient, who was shown on Monday bending the ear of Hall of Famer Wayne Gretzky in the press box, returns to the ice after recording at least a point in 10 of his last 11 contests overall.

ABOUT THE OILERS (26-29-7): Leon Draisaitl boosted his team-leading goal total to 38 and point streak to seven games (six goals, four assists) by scoring a short-handed and power-play goal on Monday in the opener of Edmonton's season-high five-game road trip. The 23-year-old German sits one point shy of his career high of 77 set during the 2016-17 campaign, although he has been held off the scoresheet in all six outings versus Toronto. Alex Chaisson, who is fourth on the team with 17 goals, hasn't scored since a 7-2 setback at San Jose on Jan. 8.
ABOUT THE MAPLE LEAFS (38-20-4): Morgan Rielly set up former Sabre forward Tyler Ennis' second-period goal on Monday to give the defenseman four assists in three games and 46 on the season, which ties his career high set in 2017-18. Frederik Gauthier also had an assist on Ennis' tally and scored in the second period to record his first career multi-point performance. "I feel it's my first full year here and it's been working well so far. Keep building every day," said the 23-year-old Gauthier, who has collected nine (two goals, seven assists) of his 12 points at home this season.
