The Atlanta Dream battled hard for the final three quarters, but still face elimination when they meet the New York Liberty in Game 2 of their best-of-three playoff series.

New York is favored by as many as 13 points, but my Dream vs. Liberty prediction is for the underdogs to work on defense, grinding this game down.

Read on for why my WNBA picks expect a physical, low-scoring affair on Tuesday, September 24, 2024.

My analysis

The Atlanta Dream have their backs to the wall and their season on the line when they meet the New York Liberty tonight.

The Dream have played solid defense for most of the campaign. They ended the regular season with the sixth-best net defensive rating, but that’s spiked to fourth across their last 10.

Atlanta played good defense for 30 minutes on Sunday. After allowing 29 in the first stanza, the Dream hunkered down defensively across the final three quarters while holding the Liberty to only 54 points.

Remove the first quarter, and Sunday’s game ends with a 54-53 Liberty victory. Atlanta got physical, and the pace was slower than the first quarter was. Slow-paced, physical slogs are Dream basketball, and they must play that way because Atlanta’s offense is inconsistent.

The Dream have the lowest-scoring and slowest-paced offense in the WNBA. It didn’t help when New York inserted rookie guard Leonie Fiebich into the starting lineup. Her length on the perimeter bothered Atlanta. When NY had trouble scoring, her defense helped the Liberty win Game 1.

Atlanta's only chance of beating NY is to play slow, physical hoops. The Dream’s playoff lives are on the line, and defending is their only real chance. They don’t score consistently and usually turn their battles with the Liberty into slow-paced, physical slogs, which seems to bother NY offensively.

That’s why four of their last five meetings with the Liberty have ended Under the total. I expect tonight’s game to continue that trend.

Dream vs Liberty same-game parlay (SGP)

Under 156.5

Breanna Stewart Over 10+ rebounds

Betnijah Laney-Hamilton 10+ points

Breanna Stewart snagged 10+ boards Sunday for the third time in four games, and the battle between Tina Charles and Jonquel Jones will allow for Stewart to snare at least 10 tonight.

That battle between Charles and Jones also frees up Liberty forward Betnijah Laney-Hamilton to do the little things she does to get buckets. Laney-Hamilton is the “glue-lady” for the Liberty, gets between 26 and 30 minutes per night, and has scored 10+ in five of her last eight.
