Both teams in tonight’s regular-season finale between the Indiana Fever and Washington Mystics have a ton left to play for.
The Fever has already clinched the sixth seed, but they have been chasing their first winning season since 2015. That is huge considering Indiana has the youngest roster in the WNBA.
The Mystics need a win just to remain in the playoff conversation after dropping two of their last three. It's been tough sledding as second-leading scorer Brittney Sykes has been hobbled for much of the second half, rookie forward Aaliyah Edwards has been ruled out tonight, and center Shakira Austin is out for the season.
With a full roster, Washington ranks 10th in scoring but the Mystics likely won’t outscore the leading offense averaging 91 points since the Olympics. Washington plays stingy defense, but that stop unit will struggle to defend Indiana’s high-scoring trio of Caitlin Clark, Kelsey Mitchell, and Aliyah Boston.
Indiana hasn’t lost to a losing team in July, with their three losses since the Paris break have come against the league leaders. The Fever are 7-0 in their last seven against teams with a losing record and playing on three days' rest. With the game total rising, I like Indiana’s chances of winning a higher-scoring game.

My analysis
Clark leads the league in assists and 3-pointers made, which is quite an accomplishment for a rookie. She’s also scored 21+ in nine of her 12 games since the Paris break.
The break did her some good. Clark is draining 43% from inside the arc and 34% from downtown since play resumed. The Fever are the sixth seed in the playoffs because of Clark’s improved shooting, and she could have a big scoring tonight.
Washington is a decent defensive team, but Clark and the Fever offense are on a different level. The Mystics won’t be able to double-team her because of Mitchell’s scoring prowess, and that’s where Clark either takes her defender to the cup or nails a step-back three.
Clark is on fire — she scored 35 on Sunday vs. Dallas — and the Mystics backcourt is hobbled, which bodes well for her to clear her scoring prop tonight
