The Indiana Fever and Chicago Sky have developed quite a rivalry since WNBA Rookie of the Year candidates Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese joined the league.
While most of the attention and ink goes to the talented rookies, my Fever vs Sky predictions expect someone other than Clark and Reese to lead the way for my Friday, August 30 WNBA picks.
Fever vs Sky predictions
My best bet
Kelsey Mitchell Over 19.5 points (-125 at FanDuel)
My analysis
Indiana Fever guard Kelsey Mitchell has been quietly going about her business.
While WNBA fans have latched onto the growing Rookie of the Year debate between Fever guard Caitlin Clark and Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese, Mitchell has been balling.
While Clark draws most of the defensive attention, the seven-year veteran from Ohio State has quietly scored 20+ in her last five tilts, and she has a good matchup to repeat this feat tonight.
Mitchell is the W’s second-leading scorer since the Olympic Games break, and is a legit three-level threat, while getting nearly three freebies per night from the charity stripe.
Fever opponents love to pester and trap Clark at every opportunity, and Chicago will probably deploy that same strategy. Clark has gotten much better at recognizing the trap; rather than dribbling through it, she now typically finds a wide-open Mitchell, and the seven-year guard has delivered from either downtown or at the cup.
Chicago boasts a stout perimeter defense, but they’ll have trouble tonight with Mitchell. The Fever guard has cleared 20+ in each of her last five, draining 50% or better from the field and 45% from downtown since the break. In what’s likely to be a fast-paced affair, she should clear 20+ tonight.
Caitlin Clark pick: Sky clamp down on triples
My best bet
Under 3.5 made threes (-155 at FanDuel)
My analysis
Clark became famous for shooting the “logo-three” but making triples could come at a premium tonight.
That’s because the Sky defends the arc better than most. Chicago allows 32% shooting from downtown, and we should expect Sky guards Dana Evans, Lindsay Allen, and Chennedy Carter to hound and pester Clark at every opportunity.
Clark is attempting and making slightly more triples since the break; she was averaging nine attempts and 33% shooting before the break, but the attempts have spiked to 10+ on 34% shooting. As good as that sounds, Chicago plays strong physical defense, and Clark won’t get as many looks, nor will she land as many triples.
Clark has eclipsed 4+ triples twice in her last five, and just once in three meetings with Chicago. The Sky defense is too stingy from downtown, and while Clark might jack up 10+, she likely won’t land four triples tonight.
Fever vs Sky same-game parlay (SGP)
One of those ways the Fever have improved is in the rebounding department; since the break, Indiana allows only 30 caroms and 12.4 second-chance points per night. That’s well below their season average, and less than optimal for Reese.
Reese has cleared 15+ boards twice in her six games since the break, but she’s only done that once in three games this season against Indiana. The improved Fever rebounding won’t allow her to snag 15+ rebounds tonight.
