Midwest rivals will collide tonight in the WNBA as the Indiana Fever visit the Chicago Sky for their first matchup of the 2023 season.

Indiana (1-4) had the worst record in the WNBA last season but has played better this year despite picking up just one win. Chicago (4-3) is looking to get back to the form that carried it to the 2021 title and has already proven it can grab a win against at least one of the league’s so-called super teams.

The Fever have played well to start the season, and more wins are coming for the much-maligned franchise. We’ll talk about whether that next victory will come tonight in our free WNBA picks and predictions for Fever vs. Sky on June 6.

Fever vs Sky picks and predictions

Over the past week, the Indiana Fever have suffered losses to the Sun and Aces. That may sound like more of the same for a team that has won only 17 games over the past three seasons and hasn’t reached the playoffs since 2016.

However, there were glimmers of hope in those losses. The Fever lost to two of the best teams in the WNBA by a combined seven points, and have shown signs that this could be a team that is coalescing around a mix of veteran talent and a new young star.

In her sixth year in Indiana, Kelsey Mitchell looks like the best player on the team, scoring 17.2 points per game while shooting 41.7% from 3-point range. Mitchell put up similar numbers last year, but the Fever lacked an interior presence that could help balance the offense.

The team might have addressed that need in the draft. Indiana took Aliyah Boston out of South Carolina with the top pick back in April, and that selection is already paying dividends.

Boston is averaging 14 points and 5.6 rebounds per game, numbers that only figure to increase as she gets more used to the elite level of competition in the WNBA. While she had trouble against A’ja Wilson in the matchup with Las Vegas, the overall impression from Boston has been outstanding.

Indiana now faces another tough matchup against the Chicago Sky, who are coming off a win over the Liberty. That was a big win, but Chicago has been inconsistent so far this season, losing badly to the Dream just a week ago.

The Sky have injury issues as well. Guard Rebekah Gardner broke her foot against the Mystics last week, and will now be out indefinitely after undergoing successful surgery.

The second-year player out of UCLA was only a rotation player for Chicago, playing about 20 minutes a game and contributing an average of seven points, 3.7 rebounds, and 2.3 assists, but her loss puts more pressure on an already shorthanded Sky roster. Morgan Bertsch is out for a few weeks with an ankle injury, while several players, including Ruthy Hebard and Li Yueru, are already done for the year.

The Sky may still have enough to fend off the Fever tonight, but it’s going to be a tough matchup against an Indiana team that finally looks to be back on even footing with the rest of the WNBA. We can get a lot of points with the Fever in this game, and I’m happy to take that spread in what should be a close contest.

My best bet: Fever +6 (-110 at DraftKings)

Fever vs Sky spread and Over/Under analysis

Chicago opened tonight’s game as a 6-point favorite. You can still find that line at some books, though the consensus line has come down to Sky -5.5. My best bet came on the most generous line I can find out there for the Fever, while you can get -102 on Chicago giving 5.5 points.

Both teams have come out of the gate playing better than expected. Indiana is 3-2 against the spread despite only having one straight-up win on the year, while the Sky have put up a 6-1 ATS mark to start the season.

As I talked about earlier, though, these two teams are facing very different circumstances heading into tonight’s game. The Fever are playing surprisingly well and have gone toe-to-toe with two of the best teams in the league this past week, nearly finding a way to get one (or even two) upsets during that span.

Meanwhile, Chicago is dealing with injury issues that should make this a tricky game for the team. The Sky should be slight favorites in this game, but I’m taking the Fever and the far-too-generous spread of six points.

The total tonight opened at 159.5 points but has been trending downward throughout the day. While you can still get the Under at 159.5 with -110 odds at some books, you can also find the Over as low as 157 with that same -110 line.

Those are fairly low numbers, even if these teams haven’t exactly been lighting up the scoreboard. Chicago is averaging a total of 154 on the year, while Indiana is a bit higher 158.8, largely due to a shaky defense that is allowing 82.4 points per night.

With injuries to the Sky and both teams playing at middling paces, it’s hard to see both teams playing in the 80s tonight. I’m leaning toward the Under, though I’m only doing so if I can get in on the 159.5 number.

His betting strategy focuses more on finding line value based on deviations from the market rather than traditional handicapping, primarily shopping between DraftKings, FanDuel, and Fanatics in his home state of Connecticut, though he’s not afraid to do deep game analysis to find profitable bets at any book.

Ed's advice to new bettors is to always open multiple sportsbook accounts and check the odds at each before placing any bet. Successful sports betting is about consistently beating the closing line value, which requires finding spots where one book is offering odds far better than the rest of the market and jumping on those opportunities.
