The Phoenix Mercury will look to snap a two-game losing streak and improve their playoff positioning as they visit the struggling Dallas Wings on Wednesday night.

The Mercury (9-10) currently hold the No. 6 seed in the playoff picture and are road favorites in the WNBA odds against the lowly Wings (4-15), who just lost a pair of games to the Seattle Storm.

These teams both play fast and aren’t exactly airtight on the defensive end, traits I’ll look to take advantage of in my Mercury vs. Wings predictions and WNBA picks for July 3.

My analysis

The Phoenix Mercury and Dallas Wings have played twice this year, splitting a pair of games with both road teams grabbing wins. More importantly for us bettors, both of those games were absolute shootouts. In the first matchup, Dallas won 107-92, while Phoenix returned the favor on June 9 in a 97-90 victory.

Both of those games went comfortably above the total for tonight’s contest, but we shouldn’t rely on a sample size of two games when making our bets. Thankfully, we have a lot more information that suggests more of the same from these two teams.

Dallas and Phoenix are among the worst defensive teams in the league, as the Wings rank 11th in defensive rating (107.5) while the Mercury are ninth (103.2). Both sides also play at faster-than-average paces, and that should result in an abundance of points in Arlington tonight.

Phoenix is the more successful side when it comes to this style. While the Mercury may be aging, they still have tremendous scoring ability on their roster. Veterans Brittney Griner (20.0 points per game) and Diana Taurasi (16.6 ppg) are still highly productive, while 29-year-old Kahleah Copper (21.8 ppg) is now the woman the offense tends to run through most often. That’s a lot of weapons for Dallas to try and stop when they haven’t shown the ability to shut down anyone.

The Wings have more than a few scoring options themselves. Of course, Arike Ogunbowale runs the show, averaging 23.7 ppg as one of the top scorers in the WNBA. However, Dallas also boasts depth on the offensive end, with six active players averaging at least 10 points per game.

That’s due in large part to the return of Natasha Howard (15.1 ppg) from a foot injury and the addition of veteran guard Odyssey Sims (12.3 ppg), which now makes it hard for opponents to double Ogunbowale without giving up opportunities elsewhere.

We’ve already seen these teams run the floor and score against each other twice this year, and now there’s more scoring talent on the floor than ever. All signs lead towards a high-scoring affair on Wednesday.

Mercury vs Wings same-game parlay (SGP)

Over 171

Mercury -5

Brittany Griner Over 19.5 points

Along with the Over, my same-game parlay is going to be built around expecting Phoenix to leave Dallas with a win tonight. I’m taking the Mercury to cover the five-point spread, a small number in what should be a high-scoring affair.

Meanwhile, Griner has scored at least 21 points in each of her last two games and should have plenty of opportunities to dominate in the post against the Wings.
