The Connecticut Sun have been scorching to start the season with a 7-0 record and look to keep it unblemished as they head to Gateway Center Arena to take on the Atlanta Dream.

Despite the Dream winning two straight to bring their record to 4-2, the WNBA odds have the Sun as a 3-point road favorite behind the play of their MVP candidate.

Find out where my best bets lie in our WNBA picks and Sun vs. Dream predictions on Sunday, June 2.

Sun vs Dream predictions

My best bet
Alyssa Thomas Over 32.5 points, rebounds, and assists (-105 at bet365)

My analysis

Having a player like Alyssa Thomas is borderline unfair. Few talents in basketball can dominate a game in every way like the four-time All-Star can and has continued to do into her 11th season in the WNBA.

The perennial MVP candidate is not only among the best defenders in the league but proving once again to be a top-tier passer and rebounder. Thomas leads the WNBA in assists per game (8.7) and is sixth in rebounds per game (9.0), making her the only player in the league to even be averaging above six per game in both categories.

She’s truly unique, and a mismatch nightmare for even the best teams in the league. The Atlanta Dream will have their hands full, even with their recent success proving they look capable of finishing with their first winning record since 2018.

But to get over that hump, they’ll need to be competitive against WNBA championship contenders like the Connecticut Sun. And stopping the Sun means slowing Thomas, which could be too tall a task on Sunday afternoon.

With Thomas averaging a combined 32.3 points, rebounds, and assists per game, she should be capable of reaching 33 total against Atlanta. The Dream ranks in the bottom half of the league in defensive rating (100.9).

Thomas’ physicality and size inside the arc could prove tough to stop for Atlanta, which allows opponents to shoot 46.2% from 2-point range. She’s shooting 52.2% from two, which is the best percentage of her career, and she’s getting to the free throw line 6.9 times per game, another career best - Atlanta allows the third-most free throws per game.

To make matters tougher on the Dream, they’re averaging the fifth-fewest rebounds per game in the WNBA (34.8) and giving up the fifth-most defensive rebounds to opponents (26.8). That bodes well for Thomas, who should also be able to take advantage of a defense that’s allowing 20 assists per game.

Sun vs Dream same-game parlay (SGP)

Alyssa Thomas Over 32.5 pts + reb + ast

DeWanna Bonner Over 1.5 threes

Rhyne Howard Over 17.5 points

What makes the Sun so terrifying, beyond Thomas’ MVP play, is the versatility that DeWanna Bonner brings to the frontcourt. The five-time All-Star leads the team in points (19.1) and her court-stretching ability is a large reason why.

The 6-foot-4 forward takes the most 3-pointers on the team (5.3) and she’s hit Over 1.5 in three of her last four games. If the Dream wants to upset the Sun, they’ll need their budding superstar to keep up with Thomas and Bonner.

Third-year guard Rhyne Howard has quickly become one of the most talented scorers in the WNBA and is averaging a career-best 18.5 points per game this season. The two-time All-Star has the size to win inside and the range to beat Connecticut from behind the arc.
