The WNBA season resumes tonight for the heavily-favored Connecticut Sun, who travel to Texas for an important non-conference matchup with the Dallas Wings.

Dallas guard Arike Ogunbowale is coming off a 34-point night against Team USA, and she could be in line for a big night as Connecticut will be without defensive standout DiJonai Carrington.

Read on to see why my Sun vs. Wings predictions and WNBA picks expect Ogunbowale to go off on Friday, August 16.

Sun vs Wings predictions

My best bet
Arike Ogunbowale Over 21.5 points (-115 at DraftKings)

My analysis

After a month’s absence due to the Paris Olympics, the WNBA is back, and we have the makings of a terrific matchup between the Connecticut Sun and the Dallas Wings.

The Sun were the surprise of the first half of the season. They are the second seed in the East, but Connecticut lacked a true long-range shooter and acquired Marina Mabrey from Chicago. Mabrey is expected to dress and contribute, but standout defensive guard DiJonai Carrington won’t suit up tonight.

Not having Carrington on the floor is going to hurt the Sun’s perimeter defense. She is a full-court pesterer, and along with Tyasha Harris likes to trap guards and force steals. This is a big reason why the Sun average the second-most points from turnovers (13.8), but it also opens the door for Wings guard Arike Ogunbowale to have a big scoring night.

Ogunbowale is one of the best scorers in the game. An Achilles injury slowed what was shaping up to be a fantastic season, but her recovery seems complete as she scored 24 against Indiana and 34 against Team USA in the All-Star Game.

The Wings guard can do it all — she takes opponents to the cup and can drain a step-back three with the best of them. Ogunbowale is a capable shooter from everywhere and knocks down 91% of her shots from the charity stripe.

Ogunbowale has the extra benefit tonight of having both Natasha Howard and Satou Sabally on the floor. Their presence spreads the court and will give Ogunbowale all the room she needs to operate against Harris and Mabrey.

Ogunbowale has cleared 22+ points in 15 of her 25 games, is finally healthy, and will take advantage of a Carrington-light Sun backcourt and have a big scoring night.

Sun vs Wings same-game parlay (SGP)

Arike Ogunbowale 22+ points

Under 161

Sun moneyline

I like Ogunbowale to have a big night, but the 161-point total is too tall and I believe Connecticut should win this game.

Dallas has real scoring issues; Sabally and Howard should help with that, but the Wings have been held to fewer than 50 points twice this season.

Ogunbowale will get hers, but Connecticut plays a slow-paced game, and its superior interior defense and rebounding will not only lead to a low-scoring result but also a hard-fought Sun victory.
