The Dallas Wings ended a nine-game losing streak with an impressive win over Commissioner’s Cup champs Minnesota Lynx, but starting a winning streak tonight might prove difficult against one of the best home sides in the WNBA.
The Seattle Storm are large home favorites for tonight’s Western Conference clash, but my Wings vs. Storm predictions expect Dallas to keep this game closer than expected.
Here are my favorite WNBA picks for Saturday, June 29.
Wings vs Storm predictions
My best bet
Wings +11 (-108 at DraftKings)
My analysis
The Dallas Wings have suffered some injuries that are partially responsible for the nine-game losing streak they snapped Thursday night and they still aren't healthy.
They finally got Natasha Howard back but neither Satou Sabally nor Maddy Siegrist will dress tonight, and that could be a problem when they meet the Seattle Storm.
Despite the injuries, Dallas is a high-scoring team that likes to work in the paint. Guard Arike Ogunbowale is second in the WNBA in scoring and is terrific at getting to the cup while Howard is beginning to find her scoring touch after a long absence.
The Storm lead with their defense, topping the league in forced turnovers (17.2) while also leading the W in steals (10.2) and blocks (5.4). Seattle is the league's best rebounding team by a shade and allows the second-fewest attempts per game from downtown (21).
What the Seattle defense does not do well, and which should allow Dallas to cover the number, is defend in the paint. The Storm allow the 10th-most points per game in the colored rectangle and meet a Wings franchise tallying half its points per game inside the paint.
The Storm's shaky interior defense should allow Dallas to keep this one close. Howard’s physicality has helped keep opponents from dominating the offensive glass and the Wings' perimeter defense is solid enough to limit the Storm’s rare triple attempts.
Both teams get their buckets in the lane and that is where most of the work will be done tonight. Ogunbowale is finding her scoring touch after a minor Achilles injury caused her to miss one game. I like Dallas to hold its own on the inside on both ends of the floor and keep this tilt close enough to cover the spread.
Wings vs Storm same-game parlay (SGP)
I expect a physical game tonight between two teams who like to get their buckets inside the lane and don’t live or die from beyond the arc.
The 165.5 total is too high. Seattle has a robust defense and Dallas won’t go off offensively like it can when at full strength. The Wings are a good rebounding side that will not be bullied inside, and they won’t fuel the Storm offense by excessively turning the ball over.
Skylar Diggins-Smith is fifth in the league in assists and has cleared 7+ in three of her last four. Dallas allows more assists per game than anyone else (22), which should open the door for 7+ tonight.
