My analysis
Jordan Montgomery signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks late, missed the entire spring training, and after a pair of AAA starts, scattered four hits over six frames at Milwaukee.
Montgomery has always struggled against right-handed hitters, which could pose a problem Wednesday. St. Louis Cardinals righties Paul Goldschmidt, Ivan Herrera, and Nolan Arenado hit southpaws well, and the Cards' high-walk, low-strikeout rates against lefties bodes well for them scoring a couple of runs.
A couple of runs should be all St. Louis starter Kyle Gibson needs. Gibson is a vet with a six-pitch arsenal, mostly throwing sinkers and cutters with a sweeper as his put-away pitch.
Gibson is coming off his best outing against Milwaukee at Busch Stadium as a Cardinal, which followed up a rough start at Arizona. He should be ready and raring to go after watching the D-Backs explode for 14 runs.
Gibson can replicate the Milwaukee outing, and St. Louis will give him enough runs to beat the Diamondbacks through five frames.
